One holiday season, my mother and I drove to the Commonwealth of Virginia. In my youth I recall spending weeks during the summer there, but it had been quite some time since we made the pilgrimage 🛻 to her home state. I enjoyed seeing light snowflakes through the Carolinas and we hit every Cracker Barrel restaurant🍳🥞that we could.
Once in Virginia my mother was directing me through farmland 🐄 and backroads to get to another town. We came to a fork in the road and I noticed her holding her hand karate chop style up by the side of her face🫣and I said, “What’s wrong?” she said “Don’t look at it”. I said, “What?” thinking there was something wrong with her head or face.
It was a weathered log cabin 🛖 on our left and she said that it was one of the places she remembered from her youth. Her family grew up as migrant farmers and she was tearing up talking about it. Think Jeeter Lester, the character in the Erskine Caldwell novel 📖, Tobacco Road where they were dirt poor and staved off hunger by chewing tobacco.
That tore up my heart💔. Not looking won’t erase the past, but facing it and recalling it could bring up painful, repressed memories for you to fish out🎣and get relief from.
In her life she overcame it and went on to go to college, marry, have two pretty cool sons and lived a full and helpful life. So all’s well that ends well – it’s part of the journey.😺
