Entering the home stretch of 2025 I am reminded of great stories from past seasons.
One Summer we toured South Africa as a family and on one long stretch of black top on both sides of the road as far as the eye could see was a shanty town . Think the old Unicef commercials, or the latest SPCA starving sad pets only in a human version! Eventually you could not look at it and had to look down the road or close your eyes, weep and pray .
My sons were very young and never spoke of it all that much. Later that year during the holidays my youngest approached me out of the blue and asked if we could send his old toys to the kids last Summer in South Africa. Their mother and I teared up. “Yes! Of course, we will see that the less fortunate kids get them!”
My oldest by contrast at one point was sobbing behind the Christmas tree. “What’s wrong buddy?” He said, “It’s just the stress of Christmas and all the presents and everything!” Clearly he heard an adult or a TV commercial expounding that one.
Finally my young grandson , who is always smiling and upbeat who could speak but had not yet learned to read, merely walked around the tree touching each Christmas present asking, “For me?”If you said ‘Yes’ he’d innocently drag them off into a pile where he knew all of the presents were for him.
So what holiday spirit will you choose One of joy and giving to others thereby manifesting more for yourself? One of allowing the stress of the hustle & bustle season to get to you?
